Minor changes are supported by big changes. This is the lesson Dell has already taught us this year. First there was the Dell XPS 13, now the Dell XPS 15 ($ 1299 / 85000r + VAT). It retains the competent side of the series, including an attractive industrial design, a discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card with a stunning 4K panel.

But Dell didn’t stop there. The company managed to make the laptop 5.5% smaller than the previous model, while the keys and touchpad are larger. And while this may sound insignificant, InfinityEdge panels, represented by four screen borders, have made possible one of the most stunning high-resolution screens on the market. Plus, equipped with 10th generation processors and Nvidia GeForce discrete graphics, the Dell XPS 15 is a serious force to be reckoned with and an affordable addition to the Best Laptops and Best 15 “Laptops ratings .

The base Dell XPS 15 will set you back $ 1,299 (Rs85,000 + VAT) and includes a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-10300H processor, 8GB of RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics and 15. 6-inch display (1920 x 1200). The model that featured in our review costs $ 2,400 (156,000r + VAT), is equipped with an Intel Core i7-10750H 2.6 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB PCIe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card Max-Q with 4GB VRAM behind a 15.6-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 3840 x 2400.

Dell can be configured with an Intel Core i9-10885H processor, 64GB of RAM, and a 2TB PCIe SSD, but such a machine will set you back upwards of $ 3,000.

When you open the box with the XPS 15 inside, the impression hits you immediately. Perhaps the effect is created by premium packaging, perhaps the beauty of the laptop itself, but we felt like opening a treasure chest. The aluminum cover and chassis base in a combination of platinum, silver and aluminum is amazing. And the glossy Dell logo etched into the lid accentuates the slim design.

Open the lid, you will see a large black carbon fiber palmrest. The giant touchpad occupies the center of the palmrest and sits right below the keyboard, which is wrapped in a pair of speakers. The power button in the upper right corner is in the same row with the function keys, it also acts as a fingerprint scanner.

If you have many important files that you want to protect, the XPS 15 offers two steps of security. You get a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button as well as an infrared camera, both systems compatible with Windows Hello. Just follow a few easy steps to set up Windows Hello to unlock your laptop with your fingerprint or your own face.

Most modern laptops don’t have outdated ports, so we were surprised to see a full-fledged SD card reader located on the right side of the laptop next to the USB Type-C port and headset jack. On the left is a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports and a Wedge Lock slot. You will definitely need an adapter if you want to connect a mouse. Fortunately, Dell has packed a USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter in the box.

The XPS 15 panel ranks among the very high-resolution displays thanks to Dell’s innovative InfinityEdge technology. This time, the company has found a way to get rid of that stubborn chin by drastically cutting boundaries on all four sides. This means you are looking at a 15.6-inch display made of durable Corning Gorilla Glass 6 with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a stunning 3840 x 2400 resolution. It is also 5% larger than its predecessor’s panel, but Dell has managed to fit it into a smaller package.

Watching the Star’s Assistant trailer, it becomes apparent that the red was made for actress Tracy Ellis Ross. Whether it’s her glittery sequined dress or her chic business suit, the color bounces off the screen and pinks spill over. The crisp detailing emphasizes the mole on the actress’s right eye and the fine thread connecting the rhinestones on her hat.

The panel is capable of reproducing 132% of the sRGB color gamut, well above the category average of 123%. This score also beats the MacBook Pro 16 – 114%, but not the impressive 258% Specter.

In terms of brightness, the XPS 15 offers 434 nits – not a dull panel, definitely outperforming the category average (367 nits) and the MacBook Pro at 429 nits. But Specter is better again – 483 nits.

If you want to adjust the color temperature of your screen, it is best to use the Dell PremierColor software. You get nine presets (Vibrant, Internet (sRGB), Custom, SD Video, HD Video, Cinema, Low Blue (D40), Photo, and Low Blue Light (D45)). While we opted for Vibrant as the default, Cinema looks nice too, and the Blue Light setting comes in handy for nighttime reading.

The XPS 15’s touchpad is not only spacious, but also quite responsive. We easily sketched a flower under a sunny sky in a matter of minutes, without even noticing a sign of delay.

Like the XPS 13, the XPS 15 has large keys on a full-size keyboard. And despite being large, the keys are well positioned and have excellent feedback. This review was typed on a Dell XPS 15 (2020) and it is worth noting that it gave us an extremely comfortable workflow. On the typing speed test, I managed to add a few words to the average result.

At 149.9 x 88.9mm, this touchpad feels like the largest we’ve ever used. It is 62% more than the previous model. In practice, our fingers almost never reached the boards, and navigation through websites and documents is beyond praise. Palm deflection worked first-class, with the cursor staying in place while we worked with the keyboard. Windows 10 gestures, such as two-finger scrolling or three-finger tap, remained fast and accurate.

This is the sound we expect from a premium laptop. Dell equips the XPS 15 with four speakers powered by Waves NX 3D sound. Among these four, you’ll find a pair of base speakers and two tweeters. Perhaps the XPS 15 (2020) offers the best speakers we’ve heard on a premium laptop, and that’s because the XPS 15 speaker set offered the best surround sound beyond our expectations.

While listening to Laura Mvula’s “Phenomenal Woman”, the funky melody easily filled my duplex with loud sound. And this is no exaggeration, the speakers are pretty darn good. I left my laptop on the couch and went downstairs myself, continuing to listen to the loud and intelligible song. The detail has suffered a bit due to the distance, but it’s still impressive sound.

And this is not only loud, but also clear sound. In fact, it is cleaner than any laptop speaker. Even at full volume, the synthesized components of the tracks remained accurate, as did the keys on the bass. Mwula’s alto remained warm and full, while the backing vocal soprano was sweet and flamboyant.

The only complaint about the sound is that the bass isn’t as good as the treble and mids. This means that while you can hear every beat of the drum machine on Kanye West’s “Mercy” and Jay-Z’s “Blue Magic”, the 808’s attacking intro didn’t sound as powerful as you’d like. Dell can fix this problem by figuring out how to integrate the subwoofer into the next laptop model. But as it stands, there are only a handful of laptop speakers that we could compare to the XPS 15.

The XPS 15 is one of the first laptops we’ve tested on the new 10th Gen Intel Lake S H-Series processors. It’s safe to say that the 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-10750H processor isn’t going to joke around. We watched an episode of Astronomers’ Club on Netflix with 35 additional Google Chrome tabs open in the background, including Twitch, YouTube, and TweeDeck, but the XPS 15 never stumbled.

The laptop passed our synthetic tests easily. We started off with Geekbench 4.3, a general benchmark test in which the XPS 15 scored 25,934. That was enough to ridicule the premium laptop average of 17,203 and push the Specter x360 (Core i7-8565U) at 17,195. However, the MacBook Pro 16 handles the XPS 15’s claims with ease, thanks to its Core i9-9980HK processor and 31,178 points.

The XPS 15 transcoded 4K video to 1080p in just 10 minutes 6 seconds. The times are significantly better than the average for the 18:44 and 21:13 Specter x360 15. But the MacBook Pro was much faster, it did it in 8 minutes.

The next test was to copy files to a 512 GB XPS 15 PCIe SSD, which copied 4.97 GB of media in just 8 seconds, setting an average file transfer rate of 657.3 MB / s. The 1TB Specter x360 SSD was much slower at 424MB / s. The 2TB M.2 NVMe MacBook Pro SSD came out at 1,017.9 MB / s.

Like its predecessor, the new XPS 15 features Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q discrete graphics with 4GB of VRAM. In this version, the video card is sufficient for editing photos and videos; it easily handles spreadsheets with a large amount of data. You also get an integrated Intel UHD Graphics processor for less complex tasks like watching a video or working with an overview.

Short battery life is generally a common sore on laptops with 4K panels, but the XPS 15 lasted 8 hours and 1 second on our battery test (continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits). Timing is below average for premium laptops (9:08 am), but great for a 4K machine. It also beats the Specter x360 (7:46) and its 4K OLED panel. But a MacBook with a lower resolution ran 10:55, for example.

Considering the powerful specs inside the XPS 15, the laptop heats up a little under load. We played Full HD video for 15 minutes, after which we measured the usual strategic points of the laptop. The touchpad temperature has reached +30 degrees Celsius, which is below our threshold of +35 degrees. The center of the keyboard and the bottom of the laptop were +39.4 and +37.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The new XPS 15 this year features the same 720p webcam as the XPS 13. The webcam is becoming a Dell branded product and one of the smallest cameras on modern laptops. The webcam is great for video conferencing and provides accurate colors and even some detail. The leather was the right color in the test shots, and there was enough detail to make out the gradient of the black and white sofa in the background. However, for a clearer photo or video, an external webcam is required.

Despite the laptop’s premium origins, the Dell XPS 15 is packed full of software. Fortunately, most of the software can be useful for optimizing your laptop. Dell Power Manager helps you manage power consumption with preset profiles to help extend battery life or improve performance. Customer Connect allows you to quickly contact a Dell technician for troubleshooting assistance. Digital Delivery monitors any software downloads and will restore the system in case of a failure, as well as the applications you use

The manufacturer recently updated Dell Mobile Connect, so the app now works fine with iPhone. Now everyone can easily exchange images, documents and videos between smartphone and laptop.

Third-party applications include Killer Control Center, which lets you prioritize network bandwidth. And if Dell PremierColor doesn’t suit you, there is always Dolby Access, which stores presets for Dolby Vision. Plus, Dolby Atmos for headphones is available, which adds a spatial effect to everything you hear. The laptop also comes with 20GB of free Dropbox storage for a year. There are, of course, additives that come with Windows 10, including Netflix, Farm Heroes Saga, and Candy Crush Friends.

Dell XPS 15 (2020) comes with a one-year hardware warranty. There is also the option of remote diagnostics with a subsequent visit to your home.

The sum of all its parts. This is a phrase that really applies to the 2020 Dell XPS 15. The laptop has been a great system before, but Dell is again finding ways to make the winning formula even better. Dell XPS 15 for $ 2,400 (156,000r + VAT), equipped with a 10th Gen Comet Lake H-Series processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti (Max-Q) graphics card, powerful enough and ready to tackle any challenges you may face …

On top of that, Dell has somehow managed to enlarge the keyboard keys and touchpad dimensions while shrinking the laptop and cropping the display bezels again to provide you with one of the most colorful, high-resolution screens on the market. And 8 hours of battery life for a laptop with a 4K panel is no joke.

However, if you are looking for a laptop with better battery life and performance, you should try the MacBook Pro 16. On the other hand, the configuration shown here for comparison will cost you $ 3900 (RUR 254,000 + VAT). But if you want a powerful machine with a stunning screen, superb sound and many other premium features, the Dell XPS 15 is the best choice.
