Verdict: Dell has taken over the clean design of the 7480, added a fast processor, and changed the price tag that most business users will find hard to resist.

We’re talking about processors that all other laptop makers have access to, so it’s up to Dell to allocate the 7490 in a different way.

Dell uses the Latitude brand for a wide range of computing products including laptops, tablets and ultrabooks. They are primarily aimed at business users, although some of the cheaper devices may be of interest to students as well.

Among them, the Series 7000 is a series of ultrabooks that includes machines with 12, 13 or 14-inch screens, as well as Intel 7th Gen hardware or, like the new Latitude 7490 in our review, 8th Gen processors.


If you’re willing to go with previous generation Intel technology and relatively little memory, the Dell Latitude 7490 can be purchased for $ 1,049.

However, if you are looking for something with a more modern processor inside and SSD memory, then the cost will rise to $ 1,219 (73,000 rubles). The flagship model with a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage will cost you $ 1,529 (about 90,000 rubles). Compared to Lenovo, HP and Toshiba asking for similar prices for the listed hardware, the 7490’s price seems to be very competitive.

Lenovo offers the ThinkPad T480, although it doesn’t offer the same processor on this model. This is not the case for the Lenovo X1 Carbon, it costs more for the reduced specs.

For the price, the HP EliteBook 1040 G4 is an interesting alternative, even if its models rely on Intel 7th Gen processors.

ASUS offers the lovely ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA, which might be a little more expensive, but offers Core i7 processors, 16GB of RAM, and doubles the storage capacity of the model in our review.

As with most Dell devices, setting options are available at the time of purchase, but this series has a fixed amount of RAM and storage for each model.


For better or worse, the Latitude 7490 is made mostly of plastic.

Where other manufacturers hide the true nature of their devices under a layer of paint and thin metal cladding, Dell uses plastic as its dominant material and the resulting surface is excellent.

Poorly designed plastic laptops are flexible and crunchy, but the Latitude 7490 feels cool and reliable in all critical areas, be it the hinge or the palm rest.

The screen hinge is sturdy and allows the display to rest completely on the table How much this matters on a laptop that doesn’t have a touchscreen we’re not sure, but maybe we’re missing an advantage. We are told that some 7490 models have touchpads, although at the time of our review of the Dell Latitude 7490 we did not find any touchscreen models, including Dell’s US site.

For the sake of being able to swing the hinge 180 degrees, Dell kept the 7490’s rear panel clean, with no ports or vents. All ports are on the sides and vents are at the bottom. Therefore, keep in mind that you should never place the machine on soft surfaces, as this will undoubtedly cause overheating.

The ports have not changed at all from the 7480, three USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-A ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port based on USB Type-C. There’s also an RJ-45 Ethernet port, a slot for smart cards, microSD cards, and even a SIM card slot.

The reviewed model did not have an LTE module that could use SIM cards and, since the standard is not uniform, LTE trim options will be different around the world.

The lack of a full-size SD card slot is a bit annoying, but USB adapters are not expensive at all.

The keyboard and trackpad are better than we expected, and they directly exuded the quality we would expect from a more expensive brand. We especially liked the trackpad, which has keys on both the top and bottom, instead of a flexible bottom panel.

Considering the amount of space for ports to the left and right of the keyboard, it might be worth using a wider design. However, the keyboard’s design is great for typing, even with large hands.

Another strong point is the AU Optronics 14-inch IPS panel, which offers decent brightness and excellent color gamut. The panel also uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to adjust brightness to eliminate any negative effects the screen may have on vision.

In terms of ergonomics, this is one of the smaller machines in its category. There is a smaller laptop, the Lenovo X1 Carbon, but the Dell laptop is certainly very portable.

As a replacement for the previous 7480 notebooks, the new 7490 looks almost the same on the outside, but is completely redesigned on the inside.

The new Intel Kaby Lake R processors go beyond what previously could be seen in 15W architectures, the Dell Latitude 7490 in our review is equipped with an Intel Core i5-8350U processor clocked at 1.7 GHz (Turbo – 3.6 GHz ), which matches many desktop processors.

Technically, the chip may require 25W under load, but most of the time 10W will be baseline consumption.

The processors are not user-upgradeable, but you can remove the base by unscrewing the eight screws – then you can add more RAM and replace local memory.


Business and business laptops are more focused on security than consumer machines, so it comes as no surprise that the Dell Latitude 7490 keeps its content secure.

The three main pieces of the security puzzle are the smart card reader, NFC sensor, and fingerprint scanner. Users looking for facial recognition can add this option as an option, but our review car only had a simple 720p 2D camera.

Truly paranoid users, although we should all be by now, will be concerned that the camera doesn’t have a privacy shutter.

The fingerprint scanner is a high-quality device that rarely detects false positives. Since this is likely the security mechanism that most people will use, it is a big plus that works reliably.


The 4-core Intel Core i5-8350U processor is fast becoming a favorite among laptop designers. It delivers most of the performance offered by the Intel Core i7-8550U at a lower price and power requirement, potentially having a positive impact on battery life.

8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB of memory is enough to run, but active users may find that after a few months, there isn’t much memory left.

Dell’s memory and storage policy is that these things are usually not regulated at the time of purchase, so if you want more memory you should look at a different model. Or, arm yourself with a screwdriver, unscrew the bottom panel for self-updating.

Most laptop manufacturers offer machines with the slower Core i5-8250U that runs at 1.6GHz, but the smaller Core i5-8350U (1.7GHz) models do.

While it’s only 100 MHz faster or 200 MHz with Turbo Boost, this machine performs much better in many ways. It handles most office tasks with ease, and the SATA SSD allows you to quickly wake up your laptop from sleep and be instantly ready to go.

he only place this laptop doesn’t impress is in the 3D graphics department, because the UHD Graphics 620 video chip is the most unsuitable for this task.

By combining the Thunderbolt and HDMI port, you can drive three displays at the same time with this GPU. Just don’t expect to get graphics performance as only one monitor uses the GPU.

Without a discrete graphics card, this hardware is not of interest to a designer or gamer, but for general business use it is a great workhorse.

The benchmark results show that the Dell laptop only loses in one graph, and that is a SATA-based SSD. Compared to a machine using a traditional hard drive, it certainly flies, but any drive-related scores could be improved with an NVMe-based solution.

Dell used an Intel 545s M.2 SATA drive in the review machine hardware, but it looks good on paper. But in some of our tests, you can see that the speeds the drive delivers don’t match the speeds you get with Corsair and Western Digital hardware.

The CPU tasks performed well, not far from the Core i7-8550U machines. Since they have the identical Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU, the graphics benchmark results remain pretty much the same.

This is another design weakness, but you share this limitation with every 8th Gen Intel of any specification.

Using the Datacolor Spyder5 calibrator, we analyzed the screen and found it could display 99% sRGB and 75% AdobeRGB. These are good numbers for a portable device, even if they are not high enough for professional graphics work.


The portability of laptops is often determined by their energy resources and the way they are distributed. The battery tests we ran on the Latitude 7490 highlight how efficient and optimized a system can be.

Using the PCMark08 Work benchmark, we ran the laptop at its peak performance, it lasted 7 hours and 51 minutes, but when set to runtime, it showed an impressive 10 hours and 51 minutes.

What helps this model significantly is the massive 7500mAh 60Wh battery, which is at least 20% more than most competing products. Thanks to this feature, the laptop can work all day long, including additional travel time.

There is only one aspect of the machine that is not of interest, and that is Dell’s proprietary PSU. It may offer attractive lighting so you can find it in the darkest hotel room, but this machine has a USB Type-C port, so a Type-C-based charger could be a welcome addition.


We cannot resist opening the laptop, even if the manufacturers oppose it from time to time.

Inside the 7490, you’ll find an exceptionally thinly distributed space with little to no room for anything more than an unused DDR SODIMM and a PCIe slot for an optional LTE modem.

There’s no room for a traditional 2.5-inch SATA device, although the M.2 slot includes a much larger module and is also compatible with NVMe PCIe M.2 drives.

For those looking to peek into a laptop, this is an extremely simple operation that requires only eight screws to be removed. A nice touch – the plastic panel at the base holds the screws in place, so you won’t be able to confuse them after removing the cover.


The Latitude 7490 has a lot to like about it, despite the fact that it is a very complex design compared to what it was before. Intel’s new processor performs superbly, and this Dell PC has a long enough battery life so it won’t disappoint anyone who likes to work on the go.

Simply put, the Latitude 7490 offers a lot more than we’d expect at this price point.
